The Durian Capital

Davao City is the largest city in the Philippines and the third most populous city of the country with nearly 1.5 million residents. It is located on the southern island Mindanao, in the province of Davao del Sur and recognised as the trade center of Mindanao. With the highest mountain of the Philippines in the West, the Mount Apo, and Davao Gulfe in the East connecting the island of Samal. Davao City is known as the Durian Capital of the Philippines because of its abundance of Durian during the Durian fruit season. With its vast amount of land it is able to maintain an urban feel as well as a provincial feel. That balance makes it a great place because people can enjoy a city life with lots of nature.

The people in Davao, called Davaoeños, speak the Visaya (Cebuano) language. While Tagalog is the Philippines’ main language, after Luzon, the majority of people speak Cebuano. (Cebuano is in fact the most spoken language in the Philippines in terms of geographical area) Because of Davao’s disciplined governance it enjoys a low crime rate and is a big reason why people all over the Philippines talk highly about this city. During August, thousands of people flock into the city to experience one of the best events in the country – Kadayawan. A festival in the honour of the Philippines’ tribes showcasing an abundance of colourful dancers and creatively designed wagons. For tourists and residents alike, Davao is one of the best places to be and enjoy in the Philippines. With its close proximity to Samal and Mati, beautiful sandy beaches are just a stones-throw away!

The majestic view of the Davao mountains creates a scene that can only be made by nature. The vast layers of mountain tops are the reason why Davao City doesn’t experience typhoons because it blocks the formation of typhoon rains. This view of the many mountains on the island of Mindanao shows the beautiful greenery and abundance of nature. Mount Apo is 2’954m high and the tallest mountain of the Philippines.
